Weekend Ampawa Floating Market

Tour (FT2)

About This Tour (FT2)

Amphawa is something a little different. only available Fri Saturday or sunday evening it is highly recommended as an alternative to the more famous and increasingly busy morning floating markets.

First we visit Samut Songkhram, the Maeklong Railway Market is one of the most unusual markets in Thailand. At first glance it almost seems like any other local market, with vendors selling fresh vegetables, colorful fruit, and other foodstuff from tiny shops lining a narrow lane. However, all is not quite as it seems at the Maeklong Railway Market. At regular intervals throughout the day, a loud train siren will sound and in a matter of moments, the shop owners will scoop up any stray produce, use long poles to hold up their awnings, and casually make way for the huge passenger train that chugs directly through the market! Once the train has disappeared, the vendors will place their awnings back into position and the market will continue as usual. This occurs at the Maeklong Railway Market up to eight times a day, each and every day.

Next on to Amphawa. Here you can stroll along areas of wood-framed buildings, small dockside shops, and small pedestrian bridges and alleyways. The community is home to many old and large trees, and it is these same trees that attract the colonies of fireflies as they flicker and sparkle against the waters of the canal.

Enjoy a boat ride to see the fireflies and indulge in the sights, sounds and smells of the Amphawa floating market. The stalls at the Amphawa floating market run alongside the canal and are a great place to take a coffee break, try a Thai dessert and enjoy the cool evening atmosphere. Your private tour guide can advise you of the best time for the boat ride so that you need not worry about enjoying the market and surroundings at your own leisurely pace.

The Fireflies Boat Ride in Amphawa can be enjoyed on any evening, 1 hour after sundown. Boat rides begin around 6:00 pm from the dock area of the little Amphawa floating market. Usually, the fireflies are present throughout the year but are more active during Thailand’s rainy season, from May to October. A moonless night, when it is almost or completely dark, is an excellent time for viewing the fireflies.
